Coaches and Team Roster
Mr. Jarrod Gay
Coach Jarrod Gay is a livelong Lexington resident, playing varsity ball at both Henry Clay and Bryan Station. After graduating in 2005, Coach Gay went on to play collegiate ball at Kentucky State University (2006- 2010). After a successful collegiate career, Coach Gay pursued his master’s degree in special education, while simultaneously working as a graduate assistant and an assistant coach with Bryan Station (2012- 2016) and then Henry Clay (2016- 2017).
In August 2016, Coach Gay found his home at Tates Creek High School, teaching special education. He was hired on as the head coach for Boys’ Basketball in 2017. In three seasons, Coach Gay has transformed the culture of the program through a focus on education, accountability, and long-term goal setting. Under Coach Gay’s leadership, the Commodores had their first winning season in 7 years. The average GPA at the end of the 2018-2019 season was a 3.0, and four of the five graduating seniors went on to pursue college ball.
Mr. Jay Bordas
Coach Jay Bordas enters his third season on the Tates Creek Coaching Staff, and his 17th year of coaching.
Previously, Coach Bordas has been an assistant coach at Lafayette High School, and Henry Clay High School, as well as the head coach at LTMS, Southern Middle and Bourbon County High School. He brings great enthusiasm to the program and is excited about the direction the program is headed. Coach Bordas will serve as the Head Freshman Coach and Assistant Coach on the Varsity. His wife, Meredith, is the Freshman Academy Principal at Tates Creek. They have three children; Miller (9), Leighton (12), and Mattox (16). Mattox is a Junior player in the Tates Creek Basketball Program. Coach Bordas is a born and raised Lexingtonian. He played basketball at Henry Clay HS (graduated in 1999). Currently Bordas is employed as the Dean of Students at Bryan Station High School.
Mr. Tyler Smith
Coach Tyler Smith was born and raised in Lexington, Kentucky. He attended Bryan Station High School where he was a 2-year starter and was captain his senior year for the Defenders. He graduated in 2013 where he attended Asbury University. While at Asbury, Coach Tyler was a 4-year starter, 3-year team captain, 1,000-point club member, 800 rebound club member, and the River States Conference Champion of Character award recipient his senior season. He graduated from Asbury with a Degree in Sports Management. After graduating Coach Tyler moved to Athens, Georgia to play a short stint with a Semi-pro club called The Georgia Predators.
Coach Tyler Smith enters his second season on the Tates Creek Coaching Staff, and his 5th year coaching. Previously, Coach Tyler was an assistant coach at Frederick Douglass High school for 3 years. Coach Tyler is currently employed at Frederick Douglass High school as a Para-Educator with Special Education. He is engaged to his fiancee, Brooke, and they will be married this fall!
Mr. Miller Bordas
Miller Bordas would definitely tell you that he is the best Assistant Coach to ever join the staff at TCHS. The players would say that he is the best teammate, the mascot, and the assistant coach all in one! Miller never misses a game and you can always find him with a basketball in his hands. When he grows up, he wants to be just like his daddy and coach others! He's thankful for Coach Gay letting him be a part of the "staff!
